Do I wear my engagement ring to my wedding?

As a wedding celebrant of over 8 years, this is a question I often get asked, though it usually isn’t thought about until the actual day – sometimes minutes before the ceremony!
There’s no right and wrong answer to this but there’s a few things to consider. The top consideration is what your ring set looks like. For example, is your wedding ring designed to sit below or above your engagement ring? Or which way do you prefer wearing them?

If it’s designed to go under your engagement ring, it makes sense to not be wearing your engagement ring during the ceremony – then the wedding ring is placed in it’s forever home and you will pop the engagement ring back on immediately after the ceremony (ready for those photos!)
If, on the other hand, you would prefer your wedding ring to sit above the engagement ring it makes sense to leave your engagement ring in place for the ceremony – then the wedding ring is placed above the existing ring.

What to do with my Engagement Ring if I am not going to wear it to my wedding ceremony
Keep it safe is the simple answer! If it fits, many simply swap it to the other hand and then swap it back after the ceremony.
Ask someone you trust to look after it for the duration of the ceremony and return it before your photos. Or ask that person to place your ring safely on your signing table so that you can replace your engagement ring whilst you are signing your paperwork. (Please ensure your Celebrant or Registrar is aware!!)
You could just decide to leave the ring at home locked away somewhere safe, and have one less thing to worry about.
Wedding Ceremony Planning Tip:
Keep a note somewhere to remind you to take the ring off if that is your plan, because otherwise it’s likely that you’ll have a mad panic just as you are about to make your entrance. Though worst case you could ask whoever is escorting you down the aisle to take it for the half hour ceremony, or one of the bridesmaids if they could perhaps fit it on a finger for safe keeping!
Another Top Tip for your Wedding
Get your engagement ring cleaned! You want it sparkly and beautiful for those close up photos.
Get photos of both wedding rings in their boxes and then of both of your hands wearing them
Consider having a ring warming ceremony – this is when the rings are passed amongst your guests (in their box) so that each guest can make a silent blessing of their love and admire your new shiny additions. This is something a celebrant would organise for you as we are experts in including amazing additions, such as this, into your wedding ceremony.

Who am I?
A Modern Wedding Celebrant in Hertfordshire
I’ve been creating fun and modern ceremonies for couples who are fun-loving and don’t take themselves too seriously, for the past 8 years. I pride myself in creating ceremonies that have a balance of fun and emotion; as the importance of your joining by love and marriage will also shine through.
We will celebrate who you are, how you met and what you love about each other, as well as keeping it real so that you can both be authentically yourselves.
So if that means you prefer not to kiss in front of everyone, we will skip that moment; but equally if you wish to cartwheel down the aisle and have a full on sing-a-long to Taylor Swift – well that would be heavily encouraged too. (Or of course any other artist!)
If this sounds like a bit of you, we need to talk!
